







Victorian Abalone and Floral Painted Portfolio
Victorian papier-mâché writing folder with Abalone, mother-of-pearl inlay and a hand-painted floral design. Papier-mâché was a popular material for decorative objects and furniture during the Victorian era. The use of mother-of-pearl as an inlay material was a common decoration technique for papier-mâché items. The hand-painted floral decoration on a dark background is a beautiful characteristic look of Victorian papier-mâché. What once used to be a portfolio that possibly held writing paper, documents, is now a memory of what once was.
Disclaimers: the binding of the portfolio is separated. So the front and the back are not connected It is very fragile. The inside pages are torn from the spine. There are no writing pages on the inside. There is foxing throughout. The back of the book is a simple black with some crazing noted.
The cover is in great condition for its age. The abalone or mother of pearl is intact and there are 4 button on the corners to protect the art work from touching the surface. This would be a beautiful piece to add tape to the binding. To simply style it on a writing desk, or to even frame the artwork.
