English Country Sheep Pastoral Oil on Canvas
This painting depicts a heard of sheep grazing in the grass. There is a body of water in the background and surrounding trees. The trees are turning color as the scene captures the change into fall season. There is a signature in the bottom right corner. A. Willis. And have attributed this piece to Edmund Aylburton Willis (British-American, 1808 - 1899). "Willis was born in Bristol, England. His father, John A. Willis, and brother, Henry Willis, were also artists. He had established his reputation as an artist in England prior to immigrating to New York City in 1831 Willis adopted the United States as his home and remained here until his death in 1899. As New York City was the center of American landscape painters at the time, it is no wonder that Willis became known for his nostalgic genre/landscape scenes with children that often included cows and sheep."
This frame pairs perfectly with the painting. Gilt and gesso, with beautiful corner details. The painting is in great condition with craquelure to be noted. The frame does have a few missing gesso portions but is good condition overall.
Colors to be noted: blue, pink, yellow, orange, brown, green.
Measurements: Approximately 22.5 x 28 in
