French terracotta jug, likely dating from the 19th century. Origin and Material: These jugs were typically hand-thrown and fired in the South of France, made from terracotta clay. Glaze: The upper portion often features a yellow or similar glaze, traditionally used to seal and protect the interior, while the bottom half remains unglazed, showcasing the natural terracotta texture. Purpose: Originally, these vessels were crafted for storing liquids like oil or water, serving a utilitarian purpose in French farmhouses. Characteristics: They often have a rounded body, a narrow mouth, and can feature one or more handles. Condition: Signs of age, such as glaze drips, minor chips, and surface patina, are common and contribute to their rustic charm and authenticity.
